Change the PHP version in cPanel with PHP Selector

To change your PHP version, open Software > Select PHP Version in cPanel, pick the version from the list and click Set as current. In the same tool, PHP Selector, you enable PHP extensions from the Extensions tab and change settings such as memory_limit from the Options tab. Changes take effect immediately.

Why the right PHP version matters

  • Compatibility. Applications such as WordPress, WooCommerce and Joomla need specific versions. Older applications, such as custom CMSs or old plugins, may not work on newer PHP.
  • Security. Old versions no longer get updates and have known vulnerabilities.
  • Performance. Each newer version brings speed improvements.

PHP Selector is a CloudLinux tool and is available on all Konet shared hosting plans.

How to change the PHP version in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel, from the Client Area or at example.gr/cpanel.
  2. In the Software section, click Select PHP Version.
  3. Check the current version at the top of the page.
  4. Pick the new version from the list.
  5. Click Set as current.

The Native option restores the server's default version.

How to enable PHP extensions

  1. Open the Extensions tab in Select PHP Version.
  2. Tick the extensions your application needs, for example ionCube, gd, intl, mbstring or imagick.
  3. Untick the ones you don't need.

Changes are saved automatically. If you are not sure what you need, click Use Defaults to restore the version's default extensions.

How to change PHP settings (Options)

In the Options tab you change the PHP values most often needed:

  • memory_limit, the memory a script can use.
  • upload_max_filesize, the largest file that can be uploaded.
  • post_max_size, the largest amount of data a form can send.
  • max_execution_time, the maximum time a script can run.
  • max_input_vars, the maximum number of fields a form accepts.

Changes take effect immediately.

How to check that everything works

Reload your website and test its key functions, such as logging in to the admin area and submitting forms.

PHP Selector or MultiPHP Manager

Tool What it does
PHP Selector (Select PHP Version, CloudLinux) Changes the PHP version and gives full control over extensions and settings
MultiPHP Manager and MultiPHP INI Editor (cPanel) Change the PHP version, without granular extension selection

At Konet we recommend PHP Selector.

If your website stops working after the change

  • Errors appear with the new version. Switch back to the previous version right away from Select PHP Version, then update your CMS or plugins so they support the newer one.
  • An extension is missing. Make sure the extensions your application needs are enabled, for example mysqli and gd.
  • The application needs more memory or time. Raise memory_limit or max_execution_time in the Options tab.

Frequently asked questions

Which PHP versions are available?

The list in Select PHP Version shows every available version, from older ones for compatibility with legacy applications to the current 8.x releases.

Can I use a different PHP version for each subdomain?

Yes. CloudLinux supports a different PHP version per folder, and therefore per domain or subdomain, and this applies to Konet accounts.

Is it risky to stay on an old PHP version?

Yes. Old versions no longer receive security updates. Use the newest version your application supports.
