cPanel MultiPHP Manager – Why not to use it and when to choose PHP Selector (CloudLinux)

What is MultiPHP Manager in cPanel

MultiPHP Manager is a cPanel tool that lets you choose the PHP version per domain or directory. It relies on the ea-php (EasyApache) packages of cPanel's Apache/PHP stack and is typically used in Apache environments to set, for example, PHP 8.2 on the main domain and PHP 8.1 on a subdomain.

In the Konet ecosystem, although you will see it available, we do not recommend using it to change the PHP version. The right way is the Select PHP Version tool (CloudLinux PHP Selector), which enables alt-php.

What is Select PHP Version (CloudLinux PHP Selector)

Select PHP Version is the CloudLinux tool that lets each account choose:

  • PHP version (e.g. 8.3, 8.2, 8.1, etc.)

  • Enabled PHP extensions (imagick, intl, sodium, gd, mbstring, pdo, etc.)

  • PHP settings (memory_limit, upload_max_filesize, max_execution_time, etc.)

  • Use of PHP-FPM/lsphp (LiteSpeed SAPI) for maximum performance

This tool uses CloudLinux's alt-php packages and works ideally with LiteSpeed Web Server and CageFS/LVE.

Why we recommend Select PHP Version (alt-php) and not MultiPHP Manager (ea-php)

1) Performance with LiteSpeed + lsphp

  • alt-php runs through lsphp (LiteSpeed SAPI), which is significantly faster than classic Apache PHP handlers.

  • Better TTFB, better handling of concurrent requests and lower CPU/RAM usage during traffic spikes.

  • Direct integration with LiteSpeed Cache plugins (WordPress, WooCommerce, etc.) for full-page caching and smart purging.

2) CloudLinux isolation, stability and security

  • CageFS: each user is “locked” into their own filesystem, reducing the attack surface.

  • LVE limits: per-account resource control (CPU, RAM, IO, IOPS, EP), and therefore stability for everyone.

  • HardenedPHP: for older PHP versions CloudLinux provides security backports (where enabled), for safer compatibility.

  • MySQL Governor (a CloudLinux component): evens out the database load in shared environments.

3) Flexibility in extensions and settings

  • With alt-php you can enable/disable extensions per account without opening a ticket.

  • You can adjust php.ini values from the UI, without touching global settings.

  • With ea-php, changes are often more “system-wide” and restrictive in a shared environment.

4) Integration with the Konet ecosystem

  • Konet servers run LiteSpeed Enterprise Web Server, CloudLinux OS Pro and cPanel, optimized to work with alt-php.

  • This combination offers the best balance of speed, security and stability in shared/semi-dedicated hosting.

Conclusion: in our environment, Select PHP Version (alt-php) is the correct, efficient and secure way to manage PHP. MultiPHP Manager (ea-php) is intended for other stack scenarios (Apache-centric) and does not deliver the same benefits here.

What you gain with the combination LiteSpeed Web Server + CloudLinux OS + cPanel + alt-php

  1. Speed and low TTFB

  • LiteSpeed + lsphp performs better than classic Apache + mod_php or generic php-fpm.

  • HTTP/3/QUIC, smart compression/serving of static files, event-driven architecture.

  1. Security and isolation

  • CageFS + LVE protect against “noisy neighbors” and lateral movement.

  • HardenedPHP for older projects that cannot be upgraded right away.

  1. Flexibility and autonomy

  • Choice of PHP version per site, with one click.

  • Management of extensions and PHP directives by the user directly.

  1. Stability for everyone

  • Per-account limits, so that a site that “goes wild” does not affect the whole server.

  • Predictable behavior during peak periods.

By comparison, the Apache + cPanel + ea-php scenario has:

  • Poorer scaling of concurrent requests in a shared environment.

  • Limited per-user autonomy over extensions/settings.

  • Less tight integration with LVE/CageFS/LSCache.

When MultiPHP Manager is (theoretically) used

  • On dedicated servers/VPS with Apache, where the administrator explicitly wants ea-php per vhost.

  • In edge migration cases where compatibility with a specific handler is temporarily needed.

In the Konet shared environment we do not use it to change PHP versions. We always choose Select PHP Version.

How to change PHP correctly (with Select PHP Version – CloudLinux PHP Selector)

Step 1: Log in to cPanel
Step 2: Open Select PHP Version (or PHP Selector)
Step 3: Choose a PHP version from the dropdown (e.g. 8.3)
Step 4: Click Set as current
Step 5: On the Extensions tab, enable/disable the modules you need (gd, imagick, intl, etc.)
Step 6: On the Options tab, adjust memory_limit, upload_max_filesize, max_execution_time, etc.
Step 7: If you see a PHP-FPM/lsphp option, leave it enabled (improved performance with LiteSpeed)

Note: if you change major version (e.g. 8.1 → 8.3), check plugin/theme/application compatibility and take a backup first.

Practical examples

Example 1: WooCommerce under high traffic

  • With alt-php 8.2 + lsphp + LSCache, the store responds faster during peaks, with lower CPU load compared to Apache + ea-php.

  • LiteSpeed object/full-page caching combined with OPcache noticeably reduces TTFB.

Example 2: A legacy application that has not been upgraded yet

  • With alt-php you can temporarily keep a compatible PHP version with security backports (HardenedPHP) until the refactoring is done.

  • At the same time, you benefit from CageFS/LVE for isolation and stability.

Tips and best practices

  • Prefer the latest stable PHP (usually 8.2/8.3) for performance and security.

  • Enable OPcache from Extensions for better speed.

  • Large uploads? Set upload_max_filesize and post_max_size accordingly.

  • Problems with imagick/intl? Enable them in Extensions and purge the site's cache.

  • Do not mix settings: do not set the version/handler from both MultiPHP Manager and PHP Selector. We use PHP Selector only.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is MultiPHP Manager wrong?
No. It is a cPanel tool for Apache/EasyApache scenarios. In the Konet environment, with LiteSpeed + CloudLinux, the correct practice is Select PHP Version with alt-php.

Why do I see both tools in cPanel?
For compatibility/visibility reasons. Konet recommends using Select PHP Version only.

How do I know if I am running alt-php?
In Select PHP Version you will see the version and the extensions, manageable per account. Alternatively, a phpinfo() shows lsphp/LiteSpeed SAPI.

What if my application requires a specific module?
Open Select PHP Version → Extensions and enable it. If it is not available, open a ticket so we can evaluate it.

Is there a difference in security?
Yes. With alt-php you benefit from CageFS/LVE and, where applicable, HardenedPHP. In a shared environment, this is a significant advantage.

Conclusion

In the Konet hosting environment, the rule is simple:

  • We do not use MultiPHP Manager to change PHP.

  • We use Select PHP Version (CloudLinux PHP Selector) to run alt-php with lsphp (LiteSpeed SAPI).

The combination LiteSpeed Web Server + CloudLinux OS + cPanel + alt-php offers higher speed, increased security, better resource isolation and greater flexibility compared to Apache + cPanel + ea-php. This ensures a better experience for your visitors and more stable operation for your business.
