A domain in your client's name while you pay for it, how it works

You can put a domain in your client's name while you pay for it. The registrant details of a domain are separate from the details of the account that pays. You do the domain registration from your own account, so the Billing Statements come to you, and then you enter your client's details in the domain's contact details. Management remains in your account. Hosting works differently, because there is no separate registrant field there.

What you need to know before you do it

The registrant you enter is the legal owner of the domain. It is not a decorative field. If you enter your client, the domain is theirs and, in a future disagreement with you, they have the rights to it. If you enter yourself, the opposite applies and your client cannot take it without your consent.

We do not tell you what to choose. We tell you to decide consciously and to have agreed on it in writing with your client, because changing the registrant later is not a simple field correction but a separate procedure.

What you need before you start

  • Access to the Client Area with your account
  • Your client's complete and accurate details, i.e. company name or full name, address, phone and email
  • An agreement with them on who is declared as registrant

The details must be real. Inaccurate registrant details put the domain at risk, because the registry may request verification.

Steps for the domain

  1. Log in to the Client Area with your own account
  2. Register the domain as usual, like any other domain of yours
  3. Open your domain list
  4. Select the domain you just registered
  5. Open the domain's contact details
  6. Enter your client's details in the registrant details
  7. Save

Billing is not affected. The domain stays in your list, you renew it and the Billing Statement is issued in your details.

How you will know it worked

Reopen the domain's contact details. Your client's details should appear as registrant and the domain should remain in your account's list.

What applies to hosting

The hosting service has no separate registrant field. It belongs to the account it was ordered from. You have two options.

You keep the service in your account. Your client does not appear anywhere; you pay and you invoice them. This is the way if you provide the hosting to them as your own service.

You open a separate account in the client's details. The service and the Billing Statements then go to them, and you join as a user with technical permissions so that you can manage it without paying.

There is no third option where the service belongs to them and the billing to you within the same account.

Where contacts come in

Contacts do not change ownership and do not transfer billing. They serve one purpose and do it well: letting your client receive specific notifications without logging in anywhere.

Add them as a contact and enable only the categories you want them to see, for example domain expiry notifications. Leave Billing Statements unticked, so they do not see what you pay us.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can't find where to change the registrant details.
They are not shown the same way for all extensions. If you can't locate them for a specific extension, send us a support request with the domain and the details you want declared.

I changed the details but the public lookup result shows the old ones.
Public data is updated by the registry, not by us. Give it some time and check again.

My client wants to move the domain to their own account.
That is a transfer, not a change of details. It is a separate procedure and it starts from you.

I declared the wrong registrant.
Tell us right away with a support request. The sooner it is spotted, the simpler it is to fix.
