The domain transfer steps for a .gr or .ελ domain at Konet are few, and the transfer is free, completes instantly and changes neither the holder nor the expiration date. All you need is the domain's authorization code (EPP code), which you request yourself from the Client Area. For international extensions, cost and timing vary by extension.
What changes with a domain transfer and what doesn't
- Only the registrar changes, meaning the company that manages the domain.
- The domain holder stays the same.
- The expiration date of a .gr or .ελ domain stays the same. The transfer adds no years.
- Your website and email keep working normally, with no downtime.
- Your nameservers are kept automatically.
Konet has been an EETT-accredited .gr and .ελ registrar since 2004 with a direct connection to the Registry, which is why a Greek domain transfer completes instantly. If you are thinking of keeping your domain and hosting with one provider, we explain when it pays off in a separate article.
What you need before you start
- The domain's authorization code (EPP code). See how to request the authorization code for a .gr domain.
- Access to the domain holder's email, because that is where the Registry sends the code.
- The domain must not be expired.
- The domain must not carry an EETT regulatory transfer prohibition.
How to get the authorization code
Since August 2024 the code is no longer handed out by the registrar. You request it from the Domain Transfer page with the Request .gr / .ελ Authorization Code button, and the Registry emails a link to the domain holder. The link is valid for 6 hours and the code it reveals is valid for 14 days.
Steps to transfer a .gr or .ελ domain to Konet
- Log in to the Client Area.
- Go to the Domain Transfer page.
- Enter the domain and the authorization code.
- Add the transfer to the cart.
- Complete the order.
During a .gr or .ελ transfer the nameserver fields are hidden, because the existing nameservers are kept. If you prefer, open a support ticket with the domain and the code and we will complete the transfer for you.
How much a domain transfer costs
| Extension | Transfer cost | Years added | Completion time |
|---|---|---|---|
| .gr, .ελ, .com.gr, .net.gr, .org.gr | Free | No | Instant |
| Two-character premium (.gr, .ελ) | Free | No | Instant |
| .com, .net | Renewal price | Yes, 1 year | Usually 5 to 7 days |
| Other international (.org, .eu and more) | Free or a small fee, depending on the extension | When there is a fee, 1 or 2 years | Depends on the extension |
Rules for international extensions vary widely. Open a ticket and we will tell you the procedure and cost for your own domain.
What to do after the transfer
- You receive a confirmation email with the transfer details, if you have email notifications turned on.
- The contact details (name, address, email, phone) arrive as they were at the previous provider. Review and update them from the domain's Contact Information page.
Why a .gr domain transfer can fail
- The authorization code is wrong or has expired. It is valid for 14 days.
- EETT has placed a regulatory transfer prohibition (
regulatorTransferProhibited). - The domain has a pending status (
pendingCreate,pendingDelete). - EETT has placed a regulatory hold (
regulatorHold,regulatorDebtOwnership).
If the transfer fails, you receive an email with the reason.
Frequently asked questions
Will my site or email go down during the transfer?
No. Your hosting and email services keep working normally.
Do I lose the time left until expiry?
No. For .gr and .ελ the expiration date stays the same. For international extensions that charge for the transfer, the registration gets longer.
Can my current provider send me the code?
Not anymore. Under the Registry procedure the code goes only to the domain holder's email, after a request that you submit.
My .gr domain has expired. Can I bring it to Konet?
With difficulty. Transferring a .gr or .ελ domain that has already expired is not a regular procedure. All that can be done is an attempt. As the domain holder, request the authorization code (EPP code) and, at the same time, open a support ticket with Konet so we can look into it.
