In this article you will learn how to change the nameservers (DNS servers) of a Greek domain, how quickly the changes take effect, and what applies to nameservers during a domain transfer.
What nameservers (DNS servers) are
Nameservers (DNS servers) determine where your domain "points", that is, on which server your website, email and other services are hosted.
How to change nameservers on a .gr domain step by step
- Log in to your account
- Go to the domain's management page
- In the Nameserverssection, enter the new values (e.g. "ns1.example.com", "ns2.example.com")
- Click Change Nameservers
The change is sent immediately to the Internet Names Registry. If the nameservers have not changed, no request is made to the Registry (optimisation). If the new nameservers are not known to the Registry, you first need to register the nameserver with the .gr Registry.
When the DNS zone is updated after a nameserver change
The .gr/.ελ Registry updates the DNS zone 8 times a day at the following times (UTC +2):
"03:00", "06:00", "09:00", "12:00", "15:00", "18:00", "21:00" and "00:00".
This means a nameserver change may take up to 3 hours to take full effect, depending on when it is made.
Nameservers during a .gr domain transfer
When transferring a Greek domain, you do not need to enter nameservers; they are kept automatically from the previous provider. The nameserver fields are hidden automatically in the transfer form. You can change them once the transfer is complete.
