.gr domain registration steps, from availability check to order

In this article you will learn the .gr domain registration steps, how to check whether a Greek domain name is available, which extensions are supported (.gr, .ελ, .com.gr, etc.) and what you need to know about domains with Greek characters (.ελ) and the Registry contact details. You complete the .gr domain registration itself in the Client Area.

How to check whether a .gr domain is available

The availability check is done in real time, directly with the Greek Internet Names Registry (ICS-FORTH):

  1. Go to the Domain Search page on our website
  2. Type the domain you want (e.g. "example.gr" or "παράδειγμα.ελ")
  3. Click Search

The results appear immediately:

  • Available, you can register it right away
  • Unavailable, the domain name is already registered to someone else
  • Restricted, the domain is subject to special rules (e.g. a geographic name or a country code)

Alternative domain name suggestions

If the domain name you want is not available, the system automatically suggests:

  • Name variations, alternative names with a prefix or suffix (e.g. if you search for "test", you will see "mytest.gr", "testsite.gr", etc.)
  • Alternative Greek extensions, the same domain name with other extensions (e.g. "test.com.gr", "test.net.gr", "test.org.gr")

Which Greek domain extensions are supported

Konet supports domain registration in 6 Greek extensions:

Extension Use Ideal for
.gr General use Businesses, individuals and organisations in Greece
.ελ Greek characters (IDN) Greek-language brands, Greek business names
.com.gr Commercial use Online shops, commercial businesses
.net.gr Network use Internet providers, technology companies
.org.gr Organisations Non-profit organisations, associations
.edu.gr Education Educational institutions, schools, universities

.gr domain registration step by step

Registering a Greek domain name takes 4 simple steps:

  1. Search, check availability and add the domain to the cart
  2. Period, choose the registration period (2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 years, as the .gr Registry works in 2-year periods)
  3. Contact details, fill in the Registry details (registrant, administrative, technical and billing contacts)
  4. Payment, complete the order

After payment, the registration is sent automatically to the Registry. For most domains, activation is immediate. Some domains (2-character premium, geographic names) may require approval from EETT (Hellenic Telecommunications & Post Commission); you will be notified by email. For how to choose a name and extension before you start, read our guide on how to register a domain name.

.ελ domains: Greek domain names with Greek characters

The .ελ domains use exclusively Greek characters and are ideal for Greek-language brands (e.g. "παράδειγμα.ελ").

What you need to know:

  • When searching, the language "Greek" is selected automatically; nothing extra is needed
  • Mixing Greek and Latin characters in the same domain is not allowed
  • .ελ domains are registered with the same Registry (ICS-FORTH) as .gr domains
  • Registering ".ελ" does not automatically include ".gr"; they are separate extensions

Registry contact details during domain registration

When registering a Greek domain, you can set separate details for each contact type at the Registry:

Contact Type Role
Registrant (owner) The holder of the domain name
Administrative (Admin) Responsible for administrative matters
Technical (Tech) Responsible for technical support (DNS, hosting)
Billing Responsible for financial management at the Registry

Easy setup:

  • Leave the default "Same as Registrant" to use the same details for all contacts
  • Or select a saved contact from your account

Note: Registry contacts concern only the Greek Internet Names Registry (ICS-FORTH) and do not affect the billing details of your Konet account.
