How backups work at Konet and what I need to do

At Konet the backups of every hosting account run automatically every 2 hours, with no action needed from you, and Konet keeps up to 3 months of history. Each backup is complete, meaning files, databases, email, DNS records and settings, and it is stored on a separate backup server, not on the server that hosts your site. You restore it yourself from JetBackup 5 in cPanel.

Do I need to do anything for Konet to take backups?

No. Backups start automatically as soon as your hosting account is activated and run without interruption. You do not need to install a backup plugin in WordPress or configure anything in cPanel.

If you want to keep your own copy outside the hosting, you can download a full backup from JetBackup 5 at any time. This is optional, not required.

How often Konet takes backups and how long it keeps them

  • Every 2 hours, keeping the 24 most recent. You have a restore point for every two-hour window of the last 48 hours.
  • 6 daily backups.
  • 4 weekly backups.
  • 3 monthly backups.

With this combination you can take your site back to a point up to 3 months ago. For an e-shop this means that, if something goes wrong, the most data you can lose is the last 2 hours.

What each Konet backup includes

Each Konet backup is a full backup of your account:

  • The site files, meaning the whole account folder.
  • All databases. For a WooCommerce e-shop that means orders, products and customers.
  • Email accounts and their messages.
  • DNS records and account settings.

Where Konet stores backups

Konet does not keep backups on the server that hosts your site. It writes them to separate, dedicated enterprise backup servers with their own hardware RAID, so even a disk failure on the backup server does not lose a backup. The servers are in a Tier III Leaseweb datacenter in Frankfurt, certified ISO 27001, SOC 2 and PCI DSS. If the hosting server suffers a total failure, your backups are safe on another machine.

Are there other copies besides the ones I see in cPanel?

Yes. Beyond the JetBackup 5 backups, which you have full access to, Konet keeps two more independent levels that only the Konet team can access:

  • Weekly and monthly server-level backups of all accounts, created independently of JetBackup, so your protection does not depend on a single tool.
  • A full image of the whole server, meaning operating system, settings, accounts and databases together, on independent storage infrastructure in a different datacenter and a different country. In case of total loss we restore the entire server as it was, not account by account.

What the 3-2-1 rule is and how Konet applies it

The 3-2-1 rule is the established backup practice: at least 3 copies of the data, on 2 different storage media, with 1 of them in another location. At Konet, in practice:

  1. The first copy is your site itself, on NVMe disks in RAID 10 on the hosting server.
  2. The second is the backups every 2 hours, on a different type of disk on the separate backup server.
  3. The third is the copy on independent infrastructure, in a different datacenter and a different country.

How do I restore my site from a backup

You restore it yourself from cPanel > JetBackup 5, without a ticket. You pick the restore point and restore either the whole account or only what you need, for example only the database, some files or one email account. The steps are in the JetBackup 5 guide for restoring and downloading backups.

If you run an e-shop, note that restoring the database to an earlier point removes any orders placed after it. Before you do it, read how to restore a backup on a WooCommerce e-shop without losing orders or let us know so we can look at it together.

What happens if my site is compromised

The 3 months of history let you take the site back to a point before the compromise, even if it is noticed days or weeks later. In addition:

  • Imunify360 continuously scans files for malicious code and cleans it automatically.
  • Your account is fully isolated from the other accounts on the server through CloudLinux and CageFS.

For the full procedure after a compromise see the WordPress hack recovery guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a backup plugin in WordPress?
Not for protection. The hosting backups cover the whole account, not just WordPress. A backup plugin that stores copies inside the same account only uses up space.

Is there a limit on restores?
You can run up to 10 restores per hour. Details in the article on JetBackup limits.

Can I ask you to do the restore?
Yes. Open a ticket from the Client Area with the domain and the point you want the site taken back to. See how to open a support ticket.
